Trust in Decentralized Services: A Look at I2P and the Future of Anonymous Networks

When we talk about online privacy, the question almost always comes down to one simple thing – trust. But how do you trust a technology when you don’t know who is behind it and cannot rely on the familiar force of law and government guarantees? The results of our study on the phenomenon of trust in the digital environment were presented at the MoneroKon 2026 conference held this June.

The main conclusion of our field research is that in an anonymous digital environment, trust is definitively shifting from institutions (banks, laws, authorities) to the technology itself. And here, I2P (Invisible Internet Project) acts not just as “another network,” but as a foundation for the financial security of the future. Let’s take a closer look.

Technology is More Important Than Laws

Our research showed that for modern users, technical reliability (4.37 out of 5) stands much higher than legal protection (4.00) or team reputation (3.87). People no longer want to believe in promises – they want to believe in mathematics and open source code.

I2P fits this demand perfectly. Unlike widespread centralized systems, there is no single point of failure or control here. It is a distributed environment where each participant contributes to the overall security.

Time is the Main Censor of Reliability

Yes, Tor today remains the leader in terms of awareness level (3.55 versus 3.01 for I2P). But this is a matter of time and history. Trust is built on the absence of incidents and long-term operation without failures (this factor was noted by 76% of respondents).

Why is I2P Important for a Decentralized Future?

One of the most interesting results of our survey: users trust platforms for exchanging digital assets significantly more (3.62 versus 3.21) if they are accessible specifically through secure anonymous networks, such as I2P.

Here are the specific advantages of I2P that we highlighted:

  • Privacy Priority: In this network, anonymity is not an option – it is baked into the architecture itself. This allows for the realization of the diva.exchange philosophy: managing digital values without outside interference;
  • Hidden Infrastructure: While Tor is focused on anonymous exit to the “regular” internet, I2P is designed to create hidden services inside the network itself. This makes transactions within the ecosystem practically invisible to an outside observer;
  • Censorship Resistance: The study confirmed that users tend to trust free/open-source software more than government control tools. I2P is a community project that cannot be “shut down” by a single decision of a regulator.

Although brand awareness plays a role, technical reliability remains the main factor of trust.
